Climate Steering for Tropical Greenhouses: A Practical Introduction

What is Climate Steering?

Climate steering is the intentional use of climate dynamics to control plant physiology. It’s about understanding that plants respond to leaf temperature and humidity, not just the air.

Climate steering isn’t just about cooling down a greenhouse. It is the deliberate use of environmental data to control how your plants behave. As the graph shows, reactive farming leads to unchecked stress that peaks too late, while steering keeps plant stress within a manageable, healthy range.

The 5 Levers of Climate Steering

To steer your crop effectively in a hot climate, you must master five primary levers. If you control these, you master your yield.

  1. Radiation (Light & Heat)
    This controls how much raw energy enters your greenhouse.

    • The Pro Move: Use timed shading. Permanent shade blocks the light your plants need for photosynthesis during the good hours. Steer the radiation only when it becomes a threat.


  2. Temperature & Humidity (The VPD Connection)
    These two levers work together to control transpiration. Temperature isn’t just a number; it is a strategy. Humidity, on the other hand, is the gas pedal of transpiration.

    • Day Temperature: This is about managing stress.
    • Night Temperature: This is the secret to your fruit set. If your nights are too hot, your yields will vanish.
    • Too High Humidity: You’ll face nutrient deficiencies and disease.
    • Too Low Humidity: Your plants will shut down from stress to save water.

  3. Airflow
    Airflow is your primary tool for managing leaf temperature. Without proper air exchange, the micro-climate around the leaf becomes a heat trap, inviting pests and disease.


  4. Timing (The Most Important Lever)
    In climate steering, when you act is just as important as what you do.

    • Morning: Sets the tone for the day’s growth.
    • Midday: This is about damage limitation.
    • Night: This decides tomorrow’s potential yield.
